Why Depression Happens

Depression can arise from many sources, such as prolonged anxiety or stressful life events like divorce, job loss, or bereavement, or physical factors like hormonal changes, chronic illness, or nutrient deficiencies. For some, it is linked to a history of trauma or genetics.

How Depression Affects the Mind and Body

Depression is not a sign of failure or weakness. It is often the result of a nervous system that has slowed down after prolonged stress, emotional strain, or repeated overwhelm. Rather than staying alert, the body conserves energy, reduces motivation, and limits engagement as a form of protection.

Depression does not always feel like sadness. It can involve numbness, irritation, anger, or a reduced sense of engagement with life, rather than feeling low. Making decisions and completing small tasks may require much more effort. Days can roll into one, spent watching TV or playing computer games to numb out and feel safe.

When depression persists, this can affect sleep, concentration, appetite, and motivation. Thoughts may become repetitive or heavy, and the mind can spend long periods looping without resolution. This pattern is not something that can be shifted through willpower or positive thinking. The nervous system responds to safety, rhythm, and gentle reactivation, not pressure or expectation.

Support For Depression

I offer support for mild to moderate depression through a  nervous-system led approach. Rather than analysing thoughts, we work with sensation, and sequence, helping the mind step out of rumination and build resilience.

The aim is to allow motivation to return naturally as the nervous system moves out of shutdown. If grief or unresolved stress are contributing factors, gentle trauma-informed techniques may be used to reduce their ongoing impact.

We may also work on improving sleep, nutrition, social connection, and gradually increasing movement, such as short walks. Where appropriate, simple self-hypnosis or regulation practices can be introduced to support this process between sessions.
